Sending New Year's greetings, thanking her for sending her charming "likness" [sic], expressing pleasure at both the well-colored larger one ("Gazza ladra" [the allusion is to Rossini's opera]) and the small photograph with the German inscription, explaining that as they always spoke English together he is writing in that language--"nature made German people a little foolish, especially in conversation with living Zerlinas [in Mozart's Don Giovanni], Norinas [in Donizetti's Don Pasquale], etc."--, expressing regret that she will not be in Vienna in the coming season, mentioning Morelli, Mrs. Fisch[h?]of, etc.
